The role
Join a skilled and collaborative engineering environment where your precision and craftsmanship will ensure tooling reliability and production continuity. As a Tool Room Engineer, you’ll be at the heart of maintaining and repairing injection moulding tools, supporting proactive maintenance strategies, and driving operational excellence. Your expertise will directly impact production uptime, quality standards, and continuous improvement initiatives—aligned with 5S, GMP, and safety protocols.
Weekly rotating shift pattern
Week 1 - 06:00-14:00
Week 2 - 14:00-22:00
As a Tool Room Engineer at IPL you will:
Repair, maintain, and refurbish injection moulding tools to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
Conduct planned preventative maintenance (PPM) in line with the agreed schedule.
Respond to tooling breakdowns, diagnose faults, and implement effective solutions with minimal production downtime.
Assess tooling issues to determine whether repairs can be completed in-press or require removal to the Tool Room.
Be confident to work on tools inside the press
Estimate job durations and communicate potential risks of delays to stakeholders.
Escalate any safety or damage risks promptly and appropriately.
Report root causes of breakdowns and tooling concerns to engineering management.
Ensure all work meets high-quality standards and complies with relevant regulations.
Support production targets by maintaining tooling quality and consistency.
Identify and log spare parts usage and requirements.
Take ownership of specific tool suites, ensuring consistent performance with minimal supervision.
Operate Forklift Trucks and lifting equipment safely and efficiently.
Support new tooling projects from commissioning through to production launch.
Maintain accurate tooling history and documentation using the Tool Room database.
Perform engineering-level changes and modifications to tooling as required.
Test and verify electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic functions of tools before returning to production.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives aligned with departmental and company goals.
Ensure risk assessments are understood and followed for all tasks.
Use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly, reporting any issues.
Promote environmental awareness and adhere to sustainability practices.
Stay informed on current and emerging trends in toolmaking and manufacturing.
Undertake special projects and benchmarking studies to support innovation.
Plan and track tooling-related projects and communicate progress effectively.
Engage in ongoing training and professional development.
Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
Work independently, managing tasks and priorities with minimal supervision.
What you will bring to the role:
Proven experience in a manufacturing or toolmaking environment.
Strong mechanical engineering background with practical tooling knowledge.
Time-served apprenticeship in a Tool Room or equivalent
Skilled in diagnosing and repairing injection mould tools of varying complexity.
Understanding of injection mould tool systems.
Proficient in root cause analysis, preventative maintenance, and continuous improvement.
Excellent attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship.
Capable of working independently and managing multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
Effective communicator across all levels of the business.
IT literate with experience using tooling databases and maintenance systems.
Knowledge of health and safety protocols, PPE usage, and risk assessments.
Familiarity with 5S and GMP standards in a manufacturing setting.
Positive, proactive attitude with a “can do, will do” approach to challenges.
Commercial awareness and understanding of cost-effective tooling practices.
Ability to mentor junior technicians and contribute to team development.
Physically fit and capable of manual handling, lifting, and operating heavy equipment.
Willingness to undertake ongoing training and stay current with industry trends
Understand and repair hot runners
Be able to make new parts on manual and cnc machines to keep tool in good working condition
Be able to polish tools to a good standard
Desirable:
Experience with PPM/TPM systems.
Commitment to integrity, safety, and professional communication.
Crane licenses
Be able to read drawings and use measuring equipment
Be use to repairing some hot runners
Be able to work with in a team and work on own
Be able to do some tig welding
Abrasive wheels trained
